A meeting to celebrate 75 years of remarkable achievements in food safety and quality will be held at Food Science Australia, Sydney, in November of this year.
This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation - CSIRO, or CSIR as it was originally known. "Food investigations, especially cold storage" was a key item on the original list of priorities in 1926 for the newly formed Executive. Its inclusion followed a ten year investigation into problems with the food supply which highlighted the need for research on a national scale to markedly improve the safety and quality of Australian food.
For over 60 years, scientists at CSIRO Division of Food Preservation (now Food Science Australia: a joint venture of CSIRO and the Australian Food Industry Science Centre) have achieved national and international recognition for their work with the food industry.
A meeting to mark the anniversary and recall the most significant achievements in Australian food microbiology has been convened by the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology Inc. NSW Branch Food Microbiology Group, the Australian Society for Microbiology Food Microbiology Special Interest Group, National Food Safety Week and Food Science Australia.
Discussion will focus on important milestones in food safety, including early experimentation with refrigeration for export markets.
The meeting will be held on Tuesday 13 November 2001 in the Hicks Hall at Food Science Australia, 16 Julius Ave, North Ryde, NSW. All interested members of the food industry are welcome to attend.
