Safe Food Production New South Wales (Safe Food)

A bill has been introduced into the New South Wales Parliament which, if passed, will establish a single agency in New South Wales for regulating and monitoring food standards in New South Wales in primary industries.

When the legislation is passed, Safe Food will initially take over the functions of the New South Wales Dairy Corporation which will cease existence. This is anticipated to be early in 1999. In mid to late 2000, Safe Food will take over the role of the New South Wales Meat Industry Authority which will also be wound up.

Under the proposed legislation, Safe Food will develop and implement co-regulatory Food Safety Schemes similar to those now operating in the dairy and meat industries. Food Safety Schemes will be developed in stages over the next 4-5 years beginning with industry sectors deemed to pose the highest food safety risks.

The New South Wales Government believes that the establishment of Safe Food will enable New South Wales to implement the forthcoming national Food Hygiene Standards in the food production and processing sectors in an integrated manner. The aim is to maximise food safety benefits for consumers and minimise compliance costs for food businesses.
